Vacuum tubes.-In the manufacture of thermionic valves or other tubes, the assembly of the parts in the envelope and the subsequent working operations such as welding or cementing are carried out in an inert gas such as nitrogen. The gas may be passed through the envelope during these operations, and, subsequently, the envelope or the parts may be baked in hydrogen at such a temperature that any oxide is reduced. It is stated that the time necessary for bombardment is materially reduced.
