Abstract
306,960. Loewe, B. Feb. 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-In the manufacture of thermionic valves, barium, calcium or strontium is liberated to activate the cathode by effecting within the valve a chemical reaction which causes the metal to be vaporized and deposited on the cathode. In an example, powdered silicon and barium oxide, formed into a tablet, with the addition, if necessary, of an agglutinant, are so introduced into the valve that heat may be applied thereto while connected to the pump. The reactive materials may be mixed with a retarding agent, which may be one of the reaction products. Silicon may be replaced by ferro-silicon. A tablet of the materials is secured inside the anode, or in a. capsule which is mounted at the side of the electrode system, and heated by electron bombardment or by high-frequency currents. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that sodium, potassium and other metals may be deposited by the method described and that deposits of different metals may be produced successively or simultaneously. Aluminium or magnesium may be employed as the reducing agent and the mixture to be decomposed may be applied to the surface of the cathode. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 296,781.
