[Class 39 (i)] In a thermionic valve the insulating electrode holder 1 has a conducting coating 5, which may be of iron, over its surface at least on the side facing the electron source on those parts which are not required to be insulated ; as shown, gaps 2 for the grid supports and the cathode are left uncoated. The coating may also be on the upper side 6. The coating prevents unequal potential distribution on the holder ; it may have a potential bias or be magnetized. Its presence during the manufacturing process assists in de-gassing, as eddy currents heat the coating and drive out gas from the holder.
