[Class 39 (i)] An indirectly heated cathode 1 has an emissive surface constituted by two intersecting convex surface to form a cylinder with the cross-section as shown. The emissive material is applied to a metal layer 4 on an insulating body. The grid 5 and anode 7 are arranged parallel to the surface of the cathode; the anode may extend only to such lengths as to subtend arcs, which include the radii BR drawn from the centres O, O<1> of the convex surfaces through the ends of the cathode.
