Abstract

452,355. Thermionic valves. TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE, 12, Hallesches Ufer, Berlin. Nov. 13, 1935, No. 31450. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] A valve suitable for use in a magnetron arrangement comprises a cathode, a divided anode system and an auxiliary electrode arranged within the space bounded by the cathode, and outside the discharge space so that it can effect control without being positive. In one form, a helical cathode K is arranged axially inside an anode system constituted by a cylinder divided into four parts A1, A2, A3, ..., which are coupled in opposite pairs to a Lecher system L. A rectilinear auxiliary electrode H is arranged on the axis of the system, is negatively biassed, and receives the modulation input. In modifications the cathode comprises two straight bifilar filaments coplanar with the electrode H, or the electrode H is a helix interwound with a helical filament. In another modification, the cathode is indirectly heated and the auxiliary electrode is constituted by the equipotential cathode member carrying the emissive coating. The member is provided with leads at both ends, and a steady biassing current and a modulating current providing magnetic modulation are passed through it.
