Variable-speed gearing comprises a shaft 3 with clutch dogs 29 slidable inside the clutch-formed bosses of loose gears 16 - - 20 meshing with gears 9 - - 13 upon a driving-shaft 2. One end 4 of the shaft 3 is squared and slides within a squared socket 5 in a driven shaft 6. A distance-piece 28 between the low-speed wheel 16 and the reverse driven wheel 20 allows the clutch dogs 29 one free position. Ratchet clutches 45 in the bosses of the wheels 9, 10, 11 allow the dogs 29 to pass through the close-together wheels 16 - - 19, a ratchet-clutch 45 over-running whenever the dogs 29 engage two of the wheels 16 - - 19 simultaneously.
