Retort furnaces.-In the fractional distillation of oils from oil shale and similar materials the charge is passed continuously through a vertical retort a heated externally by hot combustion gases in flues c and internally by the passage of these gases through flues b passing through the retort so that zones of increasing temperature are maintained. A vapour trap f is provided in each zone having an exit pipe g leading through a dust trap h to a condenser. Dampers are provided to control the passage of the heating gases through the flues band c independently.
