Abstract

210,402. Loisy, M. C. J. E. de, and Grauce, E. Jan. 27, 1923, [Convention date]. Carbonizing processes.-Solid materials such as coal, lignite, shale, or wood are distilled by the passage of a heated current of gas therethrough the temperature of which is controlled by the addition of water, steam or a cold gas. A portion of the gas obtained is burnt with air in a furnace K and led to a chamber L where cold gas or water is added the amount of which may be regulated by a device R governed by a temperature control T. The heating gas at a temperature of about 480‹ C. passes through the cylinder A containing the material and the gas and distillates are passed through a condenser F, tar extractor G and washer H to he gasometer I. The gas may be heated by passage through a heated coil thus avoiding the admixture with combustion products, the hot gas saturated with vapour of light oils being reintroduced into the material.
