Coking processes.-In the carbonization of fuel in a retort a by the direct action of hot gases which enter a heat exchanger f at h and pass through a chamber i and inlet pipe k to the retort a, these gases are heated by hot gases entering at d circulating in a chamber e surrounding a retort c and passing through an opening p into the heat exchanger which they leave at an outlet g. The semi-coke from the retort a is further gasified in the retort c from which the gases may be passed through a passage l to arrive with the heating gases in the chamber i or to an outlet m. Steam mav be blown into the coke at o and the water gas and ammonia may be separately withdrawn or may mix with the other retort gases and escape at l or m. If the semi-coke is too fine to prevent easy passage of the gases, larger pieces of coke or other fuel may be added to it at q.
