Abstract

Generating by direct and indirect contact of hot gases.-Smoke and gases from a furnace are passed over incandescent refractory material and, in the course of their treatment, through a tank containing water from which steam and gases are taken for power purposes. In the plant shown in Fig. 1, the smoke and gases from the furnace pass over an incandescent screen 6 or 7 located adjacent the bridge 4, which is provided with a secondary air inlet 8. After passing, if required, through a filter, the gases are then delivered by the fan 13 through a pipe 21 discharging beneath the surface of water in a tank 15 where solid material is deposited. The sides of the tank are inclined towards a narrow bottom from which the solid material is removed by a rake 24 through a valve 25 and balanced door 26. Steam and gases may be led from the tank direct to the atmosphere through the pipe 33 or through the pipe 34 to suit. able engines, turbines &c. The discharge end of the pipe 21 may be provided with a horizontal perforated pipe closed at the ends, or it may deliver between a pair of plates or between a plate and the bottom of the tank. In the modified form of tank shown in Fig. 6, the combustion products are discharged from the pipe 50 into the water beneath a plate 51 arranged in a tank 52 surrounded by a water jacket 54. Tubes 53 and a baffle 59 facilitate the circulation of water in the jacket. Gases pass from the tank 52 to the atmosphere through the pipe 58, while uncontaminated steam generated in the jacket is led away through the outlet 56.
