Abstract
299,425. Conte, J. Ylla-. Oct. 26, 1927, [Convention date]. Polymerized hydrocarbons.-In an improved process for producing benzene and derived hydrocarbons by condensation of acetylene gas by heating the gas in an iron or steel vessel to the temperature of reaction and causing this gas to circulate through a refrigerator arranged outside the vessel to separate the products formed by condensation and then injecting the cold gas into the reaction vessel again to prevent rise of temperature and to mix the gas, the reaction vessel is arranged so as to form an endless conduit inside, combined with a fan or other mechanical means to cause the continuous circulation of the gas. The installation shown comprises a reaction vessel 1, of sheet iron or steel, heated by an exterior hearth 3, the combustion gases passing through the flues 2, 4, 5 to the chimney. In the upper part of the vessel 1 is an inlet 6 for the acetylene, and also an outlet pipe 7, with an exhaust 9, to withdraw the gases and circulate them through a refrigerator 8, which condenses the hydrocarbons formed. The residual gas then passes back to the reaction vessel via inlet 10, or is injected into a second reaction vessel in series with the first. An interior tube 13, open at its ends, forms an endless conduit for the acetylene, which is circulated by a fan 14, thus preventing local accumulations of heat and decomposition of the acetylene. This internal circulation of the gas is independent of the exhauster 9, so that the flow of gas through the refrigerator 8 can be regulated in accordance with the amount of hydrocarbons formed and the temperature of the reaction.
