Abstract

In the catalytic oxidation of methyl alcohol to formaldehyde in the presence of steam, the amount of oxygen-containing gas present relative to the methyl alcohol does not substantially exceed the proportions corresponding with one molecule of oxygen to two molecules of methyl alcohol. The steam is preferably introduced as dry superheated steam and the proportions by weight of steam relative to methyl alcohol preferably vary from 1 : 24 to 1 : 9. The passage of the gaseous mixture over the catalyst may be facilitated by the use of pressure or suction.
