Abstract
Camphor is obtained by passing borneol or isoborneol vapour in admixture with air or other oxygen-containing gas over heated "highly active" charcoal, that is, charcoal capable of absorbing considerable volumes of gas. The charcoal is preferably produced by saturating wood charcoal with a solution of potassium carbonate, partially drying, and then calcining the product in the absence of air. The borneol or isoborneol is heated to a temperature near the boiling point in a distilling vessel provided with a tower containing a number of perforated trays supporting the charcoal, and air heated to a slightly higher temperature is then introduced into the liquid. The reaction product passes into a condenser where the camphor separates out.
