Abstract
Diethyl sulphate is prepared by the interaction of monohydric sulphuric acid and with ethylene under a pressure of 15 atmospheres and at a temperature of 65-75 DEG C., no catalyst being present. The product when poured on to ice separates into two layers, the upper of which contains a small amount of ethyl sulphuric acid, whilst the lower comprises diethyl sulphate which is then dried and distilled under reduced pressure. An example is given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of pressures of above 6 atmospheres and of temperatures below 100 DEG C., and includes an example in which dry ethylene is introduced at a pressure of 15-25 atmospheres into monohydric sulphuric acid maintained at a temperature of 55-65 DEG C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
