Abstract
Alcohols are produced by hydrating olefines and olefines are produced by dehydrating alcohols by the action of catalysts comprising cadmium metaphosphate together with a small proportion of one or more of the metaphosphates of barium, strontium, titanium, chromium and tellurium. The metaphosphates are produced by evaporating to dryness a mixture of the oxides or carbonates and orthophosphoric acid and finally heating to 300 DEG C. The reaction may be effected in liquid or vapour phase at ordinary or increased pressure, and at 100--300 DEG C. In examples: (1) alcohol vapour is passed over cadmium metaphosphate containing 1 per cent of barium metaphosphate at 300 DEG C., with 0,06 minutes contact; (2) ethylene and steam are passed over the same catalyst at 290 DEG C. and 100 atmospheres pressure, the partial pressure of the steam being 30 atmospheres.ALSO:Catalytic agents, preparation of.--Catalysts for the hydration of olefines or the dehydration of alcohols comprise cadmium metaphosphate containing a small proportion such as 1 per cent of one or more of the metaphosphates of barium, strontium, titanium, chromium, and tellurium. The metaphosphates are made by evaporating to dryness a mixture of the oxides or carbonates with orthophosphoric acid and finally heating to 300 DEG C.
