Abstract

Butadiene and its homologues are produced by passing the vapour of an unsaturated alcohol, having four or more carbon atoms at a temperature above 200 DEG C., over a dehydrating catalyst. Catalysts specified are alums, mixtures of alums, acid phosphates with or without addition of free phosphoric acid. In examples (1) allyl carbinol vapour with or without the addition of water vapour, is passed over a catalyst comprising a mixture of ammonia and potash alums; (2) 2-methylpentene-2-ol-4, is vaporized and passed over dehydrated ammonia alum; dimethylbutadiene is formed.
