Abstract
The hydration of olefines for the production of alcohols and ethers is effected by leading the olefine mixed with steam through a phosphoric acid which is initially anhydrous or substantially anhydrous. The temperature may be 100-350 DEG C. or more and the pressure up to 25 atmospheres or more. The olefine and steam may be passed through a molten bath comprising the phosphoric acid, and the bath may contain other substances which may or may not have a catalytic effect. The gases may be preheated. For making diethyl ether the proportions may be two or more volumes of ethylene to one volume of steam, while for alcohol equal volumes of ethylene and steam may be used. The production of isopropyl alcohol from propylene and steam is mentioned. Mixed olefines may be used to produce mixtures of alcohols.
