Abstract
The hydration of olefines with the production of alcohols or ethers is effected by passing olefines and steam in contact with pyrosulphates which are stable under the reaction conditions, especially alkali pyrosulphates. The temperature may be 100-350 DEG C. or more. Pressure may be employed up to 25 atmospheres or more. The catalyst may be supported upon a carrier such as pumice, kieselguhr, carborundum or silica gel; or the gas mixture may be passed through a molten bath comprising the pyrosulphate, and the pyrosulphate may be in suspension or molten. For the production of ethyl ether two or more volumes of ethylene to one of steam may be used, while for alcohol equal volumes of ethylene and steam are suitable. Liquid water may be employed instead of steam. In an example a mixture of 3 volumes of ethylene with 2 volumes of steam is preheated to 200 DEG C. and passed through molten barium pyrosulphate at 300 DEG C. under 20 atmospheres pressure. The reaction vapours may be cooled under the same pressure to recover the alcohol.
