Abstract

Ethers, such as dibutyl ether or diisopropyl ether may be employed as diluting agents for solutions of lacquers and varnishes. Dibutyl ether may also be employed as an extraction agent for oils and fats.ALSO:Ethers are manufactured by treating aliphatic alcohols containing at least two carbon atoms in the molecule under pressure at a temperature of 200-300 DEG C. in the presence of ferrous chloride, copper sulphate, stannous chloride, manganese chloride, aluminium chloride, chrome alum, potash alum, or chromium sulphate. The products may be employed as diluting agents for solutions of lacquers and varnishes, whilst dibutyl ether may be used as an extraction agent for oils and fats. Examples describe the manufacture of dibutyl ether from butyl alcohol employing each of the catalysts mentioned above, and of di-isopropyl ether from isopropyl alcohol employing the first two catalysts.
