Abstract

Benzanthrone is obtained by reducing anthraquinone with iron, copper, or aluminium, and substantially simultaneously condensing the product with glycerine in a sulphuric acid medium between 110-120 DEG C. According to an example, anthraquinone is reduced with iron dust in sulphuric acid, glycerine being added simultaneously and condensation taking place, the momentarily-formed intermediate products being hydroxyanthrone and anthraquinol.
