Abstract

1,267,262. Manufacture of sulphuric acid. STICKSTOFFWERK PIESTERITZ VEB. 5 Jan., 1970, No. 456/70. Heading C1A. Sulphuric acid is manufactured by treating SO 3 containing gases with water vapour at a temperature above the dew point of sulphuric acid and condensing the sulphuric acid in a plate column down which cone. H 2 SO 4 is passed in counter-current flow to the gas mixture resulting in the formation of foam layers in which the condensation of sulphuric acid from the gas mixture takes place under conditions such that no formation of mists occurs and the condensation and absorption of H 2 SO 4 are optimized. The SO 3 containing gas is used at a temperature between 300‹ and 380‹ C., the water vapour as saturated or superheated steam at a temperature between 125‹ C. and the temperature of the SO 3 containing gas, and the temperature of the feed acid to the plate column is between 155‹ and 240‹ C. The optimum condensation and absorption conditions in the plate column are achieved by virtue of the large surface area of the foam layer which is produced therein. The feed acid concentration is between 94 and 98À3% and the temperature of the plate column is maintained by variation of the sprinkling density of the cooled circulated acid.
