Abstract

Moist phosgene is dried by contacting with activated carbon, preferably at room temperature when the reaction, H2O + COCl2 --> CO2 + 2HCl takes place. The phosgene may be passed through a drying chamber, e.g. a tower, packed with activated carbon. Alternatively the phosgene may be contacted with the activated carbon in co- or counter-current flow. In the separation of phosgene and hydrogen chloride in mixtures such as produced in the phosgenation of amines by passing the mixture through a condenser for the phosgene and subsequently through water for the absorption of the hydrogen chloride, a tube packed with charcoal may be inserted between the condenser and absorption vessel to prevent diffusion of water vapour into the phosgene.
