Abstract

A hard porous gel such as silica gel which has pores such that at 30 DEG C., when in equilibrium with water vapour at 22 mm. partial pressure, the gel contains 21 per cent of water, is treated, when at most only partially dried, with a solution of a compound such as ammonium chloroplatinate or ferric acetate which is capable of yielding a catalyst. After the adsorption, the gel is heated for instance to 360 DEG C. to produce the catalyst. Specifications 8462/14, 24558/14, 1358/15, 136,543, and 159,508 are referred to.
