Abstract

In a method of producing a platinumalumina catalyst a portion of the platinum component is incorporated on the alumina base by reacting in an aqueous medium a halogen platinic acid with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of an alumina hydrate, and the remainder of the platinum component is incorporated by adding an aqueous platinum sulphide sol to the alumina hydrate, the resulting platinum-containing alumina hydrate is then dried and calcined. The catalyst contains 0.2 to 1.5% by weight of platinum, and each of the portions of platinum compound consists of at least 0.1% by weight of platinum based on the final composition. The alumina hydrate contains 65 to 95 weight per cent of tri-hydrate. In an example, chloroplatinic acid solution and water saturated with hydrogen sulphide are added to alumina hydrate in water, and then a platinum sulphide sol is added, the slurry is dried, tabletted and calcined.
