Abstract

Gylinders receiving liquid fuel.-A valve 10 is opened at or near the end of the compression stroke to permit air compressed in the cylinder to pass to a toricshaped combustion chamber 4 of tungsten or other steel carrying with it fuel delivered by a pump through orifices 12 in the seating 8 of the valve 10. Ignition is initiated by the high temperature of the air; and the valve 10 remains open during the expansion stroke. In a modification, the chamber 4 is cylindrical in shape, of equal diameter to the cylinder 1, and is connected therewith by two valves, one of which is opened during the expansion stroke. after ignition has taken place in the chamber 4. This outlet valve from the chamber may be either of the beat or sleeve type. The exhaust and admission valves 18, 19 may be replaced by ports in the cylinder wall controlled by an internal sleeve coaxial with the cylinder. The valve 10 may be cooled by internal circulation of oil orwater. The invention is equally applicable to both two and four stroke cycle engines. In the former case two superimposed sets of terminal pistoncontrolled exhaust and admission ports are provided. The valve 10 is made with an upper seating, as described in Specification 194,261.
