Cup-leather packing; connected to source of high pressure. - Cup - leather packing D for air and gas compressors, pumps, hydraulic rams, valves, engines, &c. is made of V cross-section with the arms at right-angles or at a slightly smaller angle and a longer arm engaging the rod &c. A. Several cupleathers are nested together with interposed metal rings G which clear the rod and the stuffing-box wall. When the arms of the cup-leathers are not at right-angles, the vacant spaces in the troughs are filled by rubber &c. rings H. Two sets of packing, facing in the same or in opposite directions, may be separated by a lantern-ring I, to which oil is supplied under pressure and the spaces between the cup-leathers and the neck bush B and lantern-ring I may be filled with rubber or other packing L.
