Double-acting piston pumps.-In order to avoid binding in a pump for an hydraulic gear the piston-rod 3 passes through a spherical bush 5 at the rear end of the cylinder, and the piston and front stuffing-box are arranged to permit radial movement. The piston body 10 is free to move radially between a collar 12 and a nut 13 on the rod and is packed internally by U-leathers. The rod passes through a bush 16 in the front stuffing- box, which is free to move radially and is packed bv a U-leather 17. The bush makes a flat or spherical joint with a gland 18. The bush 5 is socketed in concave bushes 6, 7 packed by a U-leather 8. Spaces external to the bushes 5, 16 are packed by bushes 25, 26, similar to the bush 16, and communicate with passages 19, 22 which are connected to suction.
