Abstract

168,510. Vickers, Ltd., McKechnie, Sir J., and Johnson, G. W. Aug. 6, 1920. Yielding supports.-In a thrust bearing having a dash-pot device for absorbing axial vibrations, pressure fluid is alternately drawn into the cylinder through a non-return valve and expelled through a choking- aperture by the reciprocating movement of the piston. As applied to a turbine drive in which a shaft d is driven from a shaft A through double-reduction helical gear, the shaft C of the intermediate pinions c is fitted with a dash-pot at each end, constituted by cylinders E secured to the bearing casings F and non-rotatable pistons G formed with spherical seatings g for a non-rotating ring H supporting bearing-pads J. Pressure oil is led to the pressure space e' through a pipe fitted with a non-return valve (not shown) and escapes through a pipe L fitted with a needle-valve l.
