Abstract

194,152. Carling, W. T. March 16,1922. Clutches; differential gearing; variable-speed gearing. - In variablespeed or differential gearing, one or more sets of compound epicyclic gears are employed in each of which two sun-wheels on the same shaft are connected by planetary trains, irreversible mechanism, such as worm gear, being arranged between the two sun-wheels, the arrangement being such that the driving pressure locks the gear. In effect, the arrangement comprises a one-way driving device or ratchet clutch which depends for its action upon the locking of worm teeth. The application to differential gearing is shown in Figs. 9, 10, and 11. A frame 12 carries two of the devices each driving a separate part-axle 2. Each device comprises a spur pair 13, 8 and a train consisting of a bevel pair 15, 16, a worm 18 and a worm-wheel 3. The wheels 8, 3 are mounted on the shaft 2 with different amounts of back-lash so that when the casing 12 drives, the worm 18 jams, but when the shaft 2 drives, the worm gearing works loosely. An automatic two-speed gear is shown in Figs. 1 and 5. A driving-shaft 1 normally drives a casing 12 solid through a locking train 8, 13, 15, 16, 18, 3, this drive passing to the driven shaft 2. On the load increasing, a spring 7 yields, with the result that this train unlocks and the drive passes through a countershaft 35 and a train 29, 28, 32, 33, 26, 25, which now becomes locked.
