Generating by indirect contact of heated gases. -In plant for cooling and utilizing the heat of incandescent coke, in which a gaseous heat carrier is passed in a closed circuit through the coke in -a cooling-chamber and a steam generator, a set of flues, separate from those of the cooling-circuit, is provided for heating the steam generator by a furnace. In one form, Fig. 3, in which the boiler b consists of two multitubular drums, the heat carrier passes, as shown by the full line arrows, from the cooling chamber a, through the tubes of both drums to the fan c, and thence back to the cooling-chamber, where the furnace gases from the fire-tube f pass around the two drums to the stack i, as indicated by the brokenline arrows. When heating is effected by furnace gases only, the dampers k, l, m are turned through a right-angle from the positions shown, and the gases then pass through the tubes of the lower drum and around the upper drum. Other arrangements are described without the alternative course for the gases when the furnace alone is used.
