Multiplying - apparatus. - Machines of the Thomas type are provided with alternative gear drives for addition and multiplication, the hand driving-shaft 2 carrying two splined bevel-gears 3, 4 which may be selectively brought into engagement with gears 12, 6, of which the former drives directly for addition and the latter has a gear ratio of 9:1 for multiplication, A hand-lever 24 is connected to a bell-crank lever 22 which adjusts the bevel-wheels axially on their shafts. When arranged for multiplication, the drive goes through wheels 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, &c., and a stop - carrying rack 26 limits the movement according to the multiplier set manually by means of a setting knob 30 and a scale 33. When adjusted for addition, the drive goes through wheels 3, 12, 14, &c., and the rack 26 is thrown out of operative position.
