Abstract

16,492. Hague, J. July 15. Guards &c., controlling.-In devices for preventing the doors of carding-engines from being opened until the machine has stopped, for preventing the driving-gear from being thrown into action again until the door is closed, and for preventing the door from being opened while the machine is stopped as long as the belt remains on the fast pulley, the door K, Fig. 1, is connected by a rod J to one arm of a bell-crank lever G, which is arranged to be capable, under certain conditions, of angular movement about its pivot H. The pivot is carried in a bracket E behind the slotted flange D of the fast pulley, and comprises a round part H, Fig. 2, and a square part 0 sliding in corresponding pieces N<2>, N'. The lever G' is normally locked by. the square part 0 of the pivot H engaging the aperture in its boss F. When the fast pulley comes to rest, a pin can be inserted through one of the slots D in its flange and the pivot H moved longitudinally against the action of the spring P. This releases the lever G and allows the door to be opened. The opening of the door raises an arm M, which is connected through a rod S to one end of the bell-crank lever G, into the return path of the belt W from the loose to the fast pulley. When it is desired to rotate the cylinder for grinding, the arm M can be bodily removed and the belt put on the fast pulley. The arm M is bent at its end to prevent its movement consequent on an attempt being made to open the door should the engine stop while the belt remains on the fast pulley. According to the Provisional Specification, the belt-fork may operate a part to uncover an opening leading to the pivot of the bell-crank lever, or the movement of the belt-fork may move a positive obstruction out of the path of the pivot.
