Guards, controlling.-Relates to a device for locking the cylinder door of a carding-engine to prevent the opening of the door as long as the cylinder is rotating, and to prevent the return of the belt on to the fast pulley, to re-start the cylinder, until the door is closed. A sliding bar a, Fig. 1, connected to the door lever h by a rod f, carries at its free end a yielding piece c of leather &c., which, when the door is closed, abuts against the cord pulley d or the driving- shaft e slightly below its centre. As long as the shaft e rotates, the piece c and the bar a are held down against the action of a spring n. A rod p carrying a slotted plate q, which embraces the strap-fork stud t is jointed to the bar a. The movement of the belt fork to transfer the belt on to the loose pulley removes a pin v out of a hole in the plate q and frees the rod p. When the shaft e stops rotating, the bar a is raised by the spring n and is free to be moved by the opening of the door. The plate q acts as an obstruction to the pin v, to prevent the return of the belt on to the fast pulley until the door is closed. The rod p may be connected rigidly to the bar a, and the yielding piece c may be connected to a hinged piece at the end of the bar a and controlled directly by a spring. When applied to a carding-engine with a pivoted belt fork or shifter, the bar a, Fig. 9, enters a casing i behind the pulley, and is locked by its end abutting against the arm s carrying the strap-fork, and by the flexible piece, c in contact with the rotating pulley and held by it in a groove x in the rod. The transfer of the belt on to the loose pulley moves the arm s out of the path of the rod a and the stoppage of the pulley allows the piece c to be raised by a spring or weight. The bar a is then free to move as the door is opened.
