Abstract
1864. Birch, A. Jan. 26. Guards, controlling.-In a combing-machine, the covers of the draw-box, the index-wheel, and the oscillating quadrant are locked and unlocked simultaneously in accordance with the starting and stopping of the machine. The locking-device is so arranged as to prevent the starting of the machine until the covers are closed. In the device shown in Fig. 1, the cover f of the index-wheel is locked by an arm j carried by the lever d, on which is mounted the belt-fork c, and which is rocked by the starting-rod e. The cover g of the oscillating quadrant is locked by an arm k carried by the rod e, and a third arm m is adapted to enter a slot in a pulley n, over which runs a chain o attached at one end to the pulley and at the other end to the hinged cover i of the drawbox. The belt b is shown on the loose pulley, and the covers are all free to be opened. The pulley n has to be turned into the requisite position for the arm m to enter the slot, this turning-movement closing the cover i; and the covers g, f have to be closed before the rod c can be moved to place the belt on the fast pulley a.
