Abstract
26,305. Edge, J. Nov. 13. Guards, controlling.-The door of a carding- engine is held open or closed by a pivoted arm v, Fig. 1, the motion of which is obstructed by a sliding rod h. Before this can be moved, the belt-fork q must be moved over to the loose pulley, out of the path of a lug r on the rod h, and the cylinder shaft must come to a stop. The shaft carries a disk b, Fig. 4, having a second disk c mounted upon it. Relative rotation of the disks can be performed by hand when the shaft is at rest, and, owing to inclined teeth j, such rotation causes the disks to move apart against the action of a spring d. The disks, when in contact, obstruct the passage of a second lug m on the rod h, which lug can pass between the disks after they have been separated. When the door is open, the arm v locks the rod h.
