Abstract

16,898. Crossley, J.. and Leach, A. H. July 15. Guards, controlling.-The door of a carding- engine can be placed in a partly-opened position without locking the fast pulley as long as the stripping-brush or grinding-roller is in position. The fast pulley carries a number of pins a', Fig. 1, which coact with the sliding door bar b so that the door is ordinarily closed and locked when the machine is running; when the door is fully open, the fast pulley cannot be turned, the bar being then in the position shown in dotted lines. Any suitable shroud or guard may be provided for the pins a'. A step b<5> on the bar, when up against a bracket c<2>, places the door in an intermediate position while allowing the pulley to rotate, as shown in Fig. 4; but this position cannot be ordinarily attained in opening the door, by reason of a catch i, Fig. 3, which meets a wedge j fixed to the bar and raises the bar enough for it to slip over the bracket c<2> into the fully-open position. If, however, the stripping-brush or grinding-roller be inserted in its bearings, a lever g is depressed, causing the catch i to be depressed also clear of the wedge j, so that the door can be placed in the intermediate position. Removal of the brush or roller causes the bar to be raised by the catch i, so that the door falls by its own weight into the wide-open position locking the pulley.
