Abstract

Fire-bars.-In a grate for the burning of pulverized coal, air is supplied from the bars horizontally from small holes 7 uniformly spaced over the grate, and each connected with the interior of the bar by vertical passages 8. The ends of the bar are solid, while the intermediate portion is of inverted U-shape. The bar has side-ribs 3 and a bridge-piece 2 forming its upper surface, in which are cut tapered U-slots 6 between air holes 7, 8. The portions 6 are arranged in staggered relation along the sides of the bar, as shown in Fig. 2, so that air from the holes 7 of one bar passes along the portion 6 in the surface of the adjacent bar. The bars are spaced close together to prevent fuel passing between them, and are supported at one end by a bearer fitting in the notch 4 and at the other on a bevel edge, allowing expansion to take place.
