[Class 51 (i).] A travelling grate comprises a grate surface composed of primary members C mounted on transverse bars B secured to endless chains A and secondary members D disposed alternately with the primary members and in the spaces between two transverse bars and jointed to two primary members or to lugs or brackets on the transverse bars. The transverse bars are of L-shape with bulbed edges B<1> at the upper part of the vertical web (as seen in the upper run of the grate), which edges support the primary members C. The secondary members D are supported between the bars B by means of a forward slot H engaging with a stud E formed at the rear of a primary member of one transverse row and a rear slot G engaging with a similar stud F at the forward end of a primary member in the next transverse row. In the upper straight run of the grate the secondary members lie between the primary members and as the chain passes over an end sprocket wheel are drawn out as shown in Fig. 1 to bridge the gap that would otherwise be formed between the ends of the primary members of adjacent rows. In addition, as a result of the curved formation of the slots G, the members D are given a rocking movement with respect to the members C. This action dislodges any clinker that may have formed between the grate members. In a modified form, the secondary members are supported by studs carried by brackets fixed to the transverse bars and in a further modification the primary members may be formed with holes in place of the studs E, F and the secondary members supported by rods threaded through these holes and also through the slots G, H.
