Abstract

Grates.-In a travelling grate of the kind in which the bars are threaded on transverse carrier bars pivotally connected together, the carrier bars are provided with forwardly and rearwardly projecting plates, trays or the like adapted to overlap or underlap corresponding plates &c. of an adjacent carrier bar for the interception of ashes &c. falling between the grate bars. As shown in Fig. 1, the grate bars 3 are threaded on carrier bars 2 integral with, or, as shown, attached by bolts to, plates 1 with overlapping and underlapping portions 7, 8. The plates 1 may extend continuously across the grate or may be arranged in sections between two or more driving-chains. Fig. 2 shows a carrier bar 10 with flanges 12, 15 for intercepting ashes. It is made in sections with parts 18 keying into recesses 19, Fig. 5, in the links 20 of an intermediate driving-chain. The gap 21 between the carrier bar sections is closed by a shrouding bar, Figs. 3 and 4, wide enough to overlap the gap, its lugs 22a, of lesser width, being normally kept out of register with the gap by a spacing-plate 24 slipped into the gap 23 alongside the lugs. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the bars 25 are supported on heads or racks 26 riveted or bolted to the main body of the carrier bars 27 having forwardly and rearwardly extending flanges 29, 30 forming a conveyer for ashes. The carrier bars may be bolted at their ends to chain links at the side of the grate. Fig. 9 shows auxiliary carrier bars 33 bolted at 34 to carrier bars or trays 35 with flanges 36 to retain the ashes. Passages for air are provided between the trays and carrier bars. The carrier bars 40 shown in Fig. 11 are provided with flanges 42, 43 having a rib 44 secured to the trough-shaped member 46 acting as an ash-conveying element. The driving chains are flexibly connected by swivelling bolts to lateral grate bars and to the carrier bars. Specification 237,027 is referred to.
