WITNESSES: INVENTORS ATTORNEYJ' in that weJnrnsll. ROSES'LIIAL Ami-nan 3..D.\vy, subjects of the King ofwGrreat- Britain, residing, respective'l-wyat LondonixEnf-gland, and at Dulwich,
' London, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Chain-Grate stokersy-ofwhicli the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to chain grate stokers adapted to be fitted to the furnaces of steam generators and'the like, and has for its object to provide an improved construc tion of grate in which any individual bar, or set ofbars, which may break or burn out, can be replaced with a minimum loss of time and labor and without the necessity for displacing any essential portion of the mechanism.
The invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a part elevation, part longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 2, a top view, part being in section, of two of the transverse bars on which the grate bars are suspended; and Fig. 3, a transverse section on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig, 1.
Similar reference numerals indicate'similar parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates transverse bars adapted to receive and support' the grate bars 2. The transverse bars are formed with a head 3 open at the sides, and the grate bars are formed with a recess 4 open at the sides. the
wall of which recess corresponds to the head on the supporting transverse bar. The width of the opening 5, between the jaws 6 and 7 of the grate bars, leading into'said recess is less than the diameter of the head, so that the-grate bars may be assembled by sliding them endw-ise onto the parallel transverse bars. The grate bars are of comparatively short length and are placed, on a given bar, side by side, the heads serving as pivots for the grate bars so that the latt'er may swing freely, one row resting upon" the next adjacent row on the. upper run. On the lower or return run thegrate bars are permitted to swing dm-vnwardlv without danger of disengagement from the transverse bars, the web acting as a stop for the swinging grate bars, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby providing for access of airt-o the i Specification of Letters Patent.

time permitting ash to be discharged frrelv into the ash pi Although we have shown a bulbous head on the transverse bars. we do not desire to,
be limited to that exact form. as the invention contemplates a' transverse .bar ha \fiufl' a head adapted to receive the grate harstanil grate bars having a recess. the wall of which corresponds to said head, with an ,opcuing between the jaws leading .into the recess which will permit assembling the grate bars in the manner above stated, and will permit their free movement on such pivotal :svp port. 1
The transverse bars 1 are conncctml at their ends to endless chains 8 adapted to he driven by sprocket wheels or drums 9,f,dis-' posed at or near the front and rear eudsof the movable stoker frame. Rollers 10 are fitted-at the ends of the transverse bars 1. which rollers are adapted to run on rails or guides 11 secured to the sides of the stoke:- frame so as to support the upper transverse bars and grate bars. The said rollers 10 also serve to support the transverse bars 1 on the return, or underside of the chain forming the grate, by engagingwith rails or guides 12 disposed beneaththe rails or guides ,11 and secured to the sides of the stoker frame.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we provide an eflicient grate made up of independent sections applied on supporting bars, and wherein any of the sections, or any of the bars of a single section. may be easily removed from the supporting bar without disturbing the other sections. Also that no means of attachment of the grate'bars to the supporting bars. other than the open-sided recess inelosed between the jaws (Sand 7 is necessary.
What we claim and desire to secure bv Letters Patent of the United States is t 1. A chain grate stoker comprising a plurality of transverse supporting bars having" 2. A chain grate stoker comprising a plu raiity of transverse supporting bars having heads torecelve and to prevent the grate bars belng d sengaged, and grate bars each having open ]aWs.and a recess between said ,on said heads as apivot,
chain grate stoker comprising a phirality of,transver,se supporting bars each having alwebiand aiheadeand grate bars adapted to f be assembled 4 on the heads of a; said transverse bars and to swing thereon,
the websfactingias stops for the swinging grate bars onther eturn run of the grate.
5. A chain grate stoker comprising a pinrality .of transverse supporting bars; each hav ahe d nd as e a grate bars each having; open jaws ,andan open sided recess between the jaws'corresponding to said head, the opening into the jaws being of less width than the diameter of the head, whereby the grate bars niav beslid endwise over a transverse bar an may swing on said head, the web acting as a stop for the swinging grate bars on the return run of the grate.
6. A chain grate stoker comprising a pinrality of transverse supporting bars each having a web and a bulbous head, and grate bars each having open jaws, anda recess between said jaws open at the sides and corresponding to said head, the opening of the jaws being of less width than the' diameter of the head, whereby. tiiefgrate bars may he 1 slid endwise over a transverse bar and may swing on said head, the web acting asa stop for the swinging grate bars on thelreturn run of the grate, e
In testimony whereof we haveh'ercunto signdonr names in the presence of'two any scribing witnesses. V
