Grates.-The links or bars a of a travelling chain grate are provided on one or both sides with one or a pair of inclined air ports b situated above and partly around the pivotal centres c of the links so as to direct the whole or the major portion of the currents of air passing upwardly between the links towards the incoming fuel. Auxiliary grooves i inclined in the same direction as the ports b are provided on the upper portions of the lateral face or faces of the links. Narrow air spaces are provided between the lateral faces of adjacent links above their pivoted centres. The links are provided with curved undulating fuel surfaces p.
