Firebars and grates. - In a furnace grate in which the firebars are set in close contact and air passages are provided by side grooves, the bars are so formed and arranged that adjacent lines of grooves are directed at different angles. The bars may be grooved either at one or both sides, and some ungrooved bars may be used. In the group or set of firebars shown in Fig. 2, which comprises a bar 15 without side grooves, and two side bars 11, 16, and three intermediate, bars 12, 13, 14 grooved on one side only, the grooves 21, 34 are vertical, and the grooves 35, 22 are inclined in the opposite direction to the grooves 33. The two side, bars are formed with transverse surface grooves, 19, and the intermediate bars have longitudinal grooves 25. The grooves of the individual bars may extend in different directions. When the bars are arranged transversely in the grate registering apertures 36, Fig. 4, form air channels running the length of the grate, and the grooves 39 extend from these apertures to the grate surface. A lip or flange 37 round the lower part of the aperture extends into a corresponding recess on the next bar. When the bars are grooved on both sides the grooves or their surface ends 40, 41 may he staggered on the two sides, and the bars can then be arranged with the grooves or their surface ends in adjacent faces either in or out of register, as shown in Figs. 9 and 8 respectively.
