Grates.-In grates with reciprocating channel or trough bars having shorter bars or plates fitted over them, grooves or openings c<1>, c<2> of the form shown, are provided in the shorter bars. The grooves c<1> are inclined as shown in Fig. 5, and the openings or slots c<2> may be transverse as shown in Fig. 2, or of the forms shown in Figs. 9 and 10. Fixed grids d, made in sections hinged together, are mounted within the trough bars on the perforated bases thereof for the discharge of ashes, being attached to the supports h for the trough bars. The shorter bars are formed with projections c<4> taking under cross pieces a<3> on the trough bars. Jets of steam are preferably delivered into the front ends of the trough bars by nozzles e.
