To facilitate the removal of the bars d in a group, they may be mounted in a frame h. The webs k of the bars d are tapered and the bars are spaced apart to form longitudinal slots for the passage of air or provided with tapered recesses m, n at their sides forming air passages which discharge vertically and horizontally into the fuel bed. Instead of mounting the bars in a trough, they may be arranged in a frame a, Fig. 5, open at the bottom and secured together by a bolt o.
