Incandescent gas lamps ; railway-carriage roof and like lamps.-An upright burner, which may be employed with new or existing lamps, comprises a bunsen tube 3 communicating by outlets 5 with a gauze-covered annular groove 10 in the base of a chamber 6, of which the outlet towards the mantle may be adjusted by means of a ring 8. Air supplied to the chamber 12 by the tubes 13. is directed on to the upper surface of the flame by a fireclay or refractory deflector 14, which is shaped to correspund to the shape of the annular mantle 7. Thus the flame impinges upon, or sweeps over, the upper surface of the mantle without passing through it. The boss 20<a> of the arms 20 carrying the asbestos, steatite, metal, or other ring 15, to which the outer edge of the mantle is attached, and the deflector 14, are both mounted upon a thimble 18, which can be adjusted by screwing it upon the upper end of a split tube 17, of which the lower end is turned into a groove 16<a> in the stem 16 to prevent the detachment of the mantle holder and the deflector when the pivoted arm 23 is swung out. The mantle 7 may be shaped by a mandrel and shrunk on to the ring 15 by incineration. The Provisional Specification states that the mantle ring may be mounted on spring wires or other resilient supports.
