Abstract

12,160. Schodt, P. G. de. May 17. Incandescent gas burners; burners, mounting; burners, materials jor. - In a system of illuminating by incandescent mantles, an upright bunsen burner is provided with an elbow or bend and with an elongated chimney for creating a draught along the axis of a mantle open at both ends and held in position without an internal support. In the construction shown in Fig: 1, suitable for a shop lamp, the chimney 4 is supported on the elbow 2 of the burner 1, and a reflector 8 is arranged above the mantle. The mantle 5, rendered rigid by intense preliminary burning, is supported by a rod 6 protected by a magnesia sheath 7. In a modification, a number of inclined nozzles carrying mantles and long-necked chimneys project from a common chamber on a mixing-tube. Fig. 3 shows a lamp for public illumination in which the burners are mounted on a box 7, a hollow rod on which enters a pipe containing a spring 10. By depressing the box against the action of the spring, the ends of the chimneys may be freed from the openings in the reflector 3 leading to the flues 4.
