Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
HAROLD J. BELL, OF GLOUCESTER CITY, NEIV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE l YELSBACH INCANDESCENT GAS LIGHT COMPANY, OE NEI/V JERSEY.
INCANDESCENT GAS-JBURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,166, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed May 10, 1888x Serial No. 273,456. (No model.)
I To LZ/Z whom it may con/cern.'
Be it known that I, HAROLD J. BELL, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to incandescent gasburners; and it consists in a combined gallery 1o and burner adapted for use with a suspended mantle or hood in the lVelsbach system of incandescent gas-lighting.
The invention will be more Particularly hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved incandescent gas-burner and gallery combined. Fig. 2 is a plan of the 2o saine. Fig. 8 is aV vertical section of the saine with chimney-gallery, chimney, mantle, and mantle-support. A
The numeral l designates a portion of an atmospheric gas-burner tube having at its upper end a gas and air mixing chamber, 2, inclosing a perforated or gauze diaphragm, 8, above which is seated a burner-tip, 4, provided with a circular series of gas-exits, 5, that open into an annular flame-passage, G, 3o the construction of these parts being similar to that shown and claimed in an application,
Serial No. 200,505, tiled by me March 8, 1888. The burner-tip and upper part of its sup porting-tube are surrounded at a suitable distance by a deep annular deliector, 7, which forms, with the outer wall of the burner-tip,
an annular chamber to receive and conceal the lower ragged edge or skirt of the mantle 8, which is supported by a rod or wire, 9, as
4o usual. The deiiector 7 may be provided with a vertically-elon gated and lon gitu dinally-per forated lug, lO, to receive the'rod or wire 9, which is held in place at any desired height by means of a set-screw, 1l, passed into the lug. Owing to the depth or height of the delector a much longer lug, 10, can be usedy than has heretofore been practicable, thereby affording a better support for the wire or rod 9 without detracting from the appearance of the burner. The upper edge of the deflector 7 is formed with an inwardly-turned lip, l2, which has a notch, 13, in line with the lug l0, to permit the passage of the mantle-supporting rod or wire.
The lower part of the delector 7 is provided wit-h an external horizontal ilange,vl4, and from this flange a series of converging arms, l5, extend downward and terminate in a ring, 16, that is secured to the burner-tube l in any suitable manner. It will be observed that the annular deiiector 7, with the flange 14 and converging arms l5, constitute a gallery which, through the ring 16 and tube l, is combined with the burner and practically integral therewith.
A chimney-gallery, 17, ot' any suit-able form, may be slipped over the annular deflector? or be secured thereto in any convenient manner, to support a chimney, 18, around the burner and incandescing device.
The diameter of the tube l should be sufficient to enable it to be slipped over a suitable atmospheric gas-tube supported by a fixture.
That I claim isl. The combination, with a gas-burner tube, of a deep annular deflector surrounding the burner-tip and having' converging arms connected with the burn er-tube and a verticallyelongated lug perforated longitudinally to receive a rod or wire for supporting an incandescent device, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the gas-burner and its tube l, the annular deflector 7, having a verticallyelongated and longitudinally-perforated lug, 10, and provided with converging arms l5, connected with the burner-tube, the rod 9, and mantle 8, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD J. BELL.
