.struction of gas-burner for use with an incandescentl mantle, wherebyv finely-divided streams or jets of an intimate mixture of gas and air are caused to issue radially in horizontal direction from the periphery of the burner-head, and thus produce a iiame of such a ball or bulb shaped form as to be, in contradistinction to the form of the flames of incandescent gas-burners of well-known construction, of a greater diameter and in contact with a larger portion of the surface of the incandescent mantle, thereby effecting the possibly greatest amount of illumination.
With this end in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described with reference to theaccompanying drawing, in which I have shown a vertical central section of a preferred form of my improved incandescent gas-burner ernbodying my invention. The upper end a of the socket a,with which the gallery a2 is placed upon the gas-supply tube b, provided in well-known manner with air-supply orifices b', is shouldered or `enlarged so as to form with a socket or ringc, screwed upon or otherwise attached to the enlarged end a, a mixing-chamber of greater diameter than the supply-tube b. The upper part or top of this mixing-chamber is constituted by a solid circular plate or disk d, supported by a perforated conical socket d', the latter and the solid disk d being constructed and united so as to form an inverted cup having a flaring or tapering wall and being'held in position upon the upper rim of the enlargement ct by means of 'the socket or ring c, as this is obvious from the drawing without further detailed explanation. The inverted cup d d is arranged to overtop the socket or ring c, so that the diskd is a certain distance apart and above lthe upper rim of the socket. or ring c, whereby a lateral annular outlet-passage for the gas and air mixture is formed between the disk d and the socket or ring c. Just below the disk d the perforated outwardly-tapering wall d' is provided with a stronglymarked contracture or shoulder d2, and it is this shoulder in combination with the laterally-projecting edge of the disk d which in consequence of their peculiar influence upon the issuing gas and air mixture form the most essential features of my invention, as will be explained later on. l

The function of my improved incandescent gas-burneris as follows: The gas and air mixture striking in its upward flow against the disk d is deflected and caused to issue radially in orl about in horizontal direction through the perforations just below the de- Ilecting-disk d. The protruding edge of the latter, which overlaps or projects over the contractura or shoulder d2, acts at the same time as a guide for the issuing jets of the gas mixture and assists such jets to continue their radial outward flow in chiefly a horizontal direction. The draft of external air entering into the chimney from below bends the horizontal gas-mixture jets, or, rather, horizontal veil of such gas mixture, upward, and thus a llame is produced of a bulb shape, such as to be in contact with a considerably large portion of the surface of the incandescent mantle, and consequently produce a highly-increased illuminating eect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure i by Letters Patent, is-
l. A burner comprising a gasand air supply tube, a mixing-chamber,an element seated on the latter and having a perforated Haring upper portion, and a disk covering said upper portion, for the purpose setforth.
2. A burner comprising a gas and air supply tube, a mixing-chamber at the outlet, a converging element seated on the mixing- IOO chamber and having a perforated flaring upl 4. A burner comprising a gas and air supper portion, and a disk covering said upper portion, for the purpose set forth.

A burner comprising'a gas and air supply tube, a mixing-chamber at the outlet thereof, a sleeve surrounding the latter, a converging element having a flaring upper portion, and a solid disk covering said flaring portion and seated on the chamber Within the sleeve, and ports formed in said liaring portion parallel to the plane of the disk, for the purpose set forth.
