Description

Patented October 13, 1903.
AIlENT rricn.
JOHN DOORENBOS, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,316, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed December 29,1902. Serial No. 136,966. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern: 4
Beit known that I, JOHN Doonnnsosa citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burner-Tips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to Bunsen-burner caps, or gauze caps, as they are commonly known by reason of the common use of gauze in their construction.
My primary object is to provide an improved cap for Bunsen burners, particular attention being paid to securing a more simple and durable construction than has been known heretofore and at the same time providing against the possibility of explosions of any force whatever, which mightinjure the delicate incandescent mantle commonly employed.
In the accompanying drawings my invention is shown applied to the plural-burner-orifice Bunsen burner of the kind described in Patent No. 686,035, granted to John Doorenbos and Garett G. Doorenbos, foran improved incandescent gas-lamp, November 5, 1901. It will be understood, however, that the improved burner-cap may be applied advantageously to any burner of the Bunsen type.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of the top of a burner-body of the kind shown in said patent; ,Fig. 2, a section taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 an enlarged sectional view of the burner-tip employed.
In the construction shown, A represents the removable top of a Bunsen burner of the plural-burner-orifice type shown in said patent; B, burner-caps applied to said top, and (J mantle-standards supported by said caps.
Each burner-cap comprises, preferably, an integrally-formed lava tip I) of circular form and provided on its fiat under surface with an annular channel 17, with which communicate outwardly-inclined perforations 11 opening at a cone-frustum surface b surrounding a central hollow boss or standard-socket 12 a circular piece of wire-gauze b upon which the bottom surface of the tip rests, and a circular clip or ferrule I), having a short sleeve or shank 19 an annular flange or seat Z2 and an upwardly-extending sleeve b ,which receives the tip I) and has its upper portion spun over the outer margin of the surface 6 to form a retaining-flange b Each burnercap has the shank b fitted into the upper end of a short tube 0, the lower end of which fits Within a socket c 011 the burner-body top A. Concentric with the sockets c are perforations or orifices c in the top, through which the mixture of gas and air passes from a common mixer chamber, as explained in the above-mentioned patent.
It will be understood readily that the improved burner-cap may be applied to any Bunsen burner, regardless of the number of burner-orifices. It will be observed that the annular groove 1) affords but small space above the gauze b below which the flame cannot pass, so that no opportunity for an ex plosion of any magnitude whatever is afiorded. The socket for the mantle-standard is formed integrally with the top, and the whole construction is substantial and durable.
Changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention may be made. Hence no undue limitation should be understood from the foregoing detailed description, which has been given for clearness of understanding only.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved burner-cap, comprising a perforated tip, a gauze, and a clip having a downwardly-extending hollow shank and a seat in which said gauze and tip are secured, for the purpose set forth.
2. An improved burner-cap, comprising a tip having a flat under side provided with an annular recess and having perforations communicating with said recess, a gauze upon which the under side of said tip rests, and an annular clip securing said parts together, for the purpose set forth.
3. An improved burner-cap, comprising an integrally-formed perforated tip and central mantle standard socket, said tip being equipped atits underside withahollow shank, in combination with a short tube receiving said shank, and a burner-body top having a socket receiving said tube, for the purpose set forth.
