Description

THEODORE cmuen;
imprevement in Gas urnersn NO. 120,715, Patented Nov. 7,1871.
men.
THEODORE OLOUGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,715, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE OLoUeH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas- Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is, a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference thereon.
The invention relates more particularly to burners for burning illuminating gas made by saturating air with vapors of gasoline, commonly called air-gas; and is an. improvement upon the burner for which Letters Patent No. 104,271 were issued to me June 14, 1870; and whereby the common bat-wing or fishtail burner may be used for such gas notwithstanding its variable density as it comes from the generating apparatus, said adaptability being effected by perforating the base of the burner-tube with a hole or holes for gas to escape at the base of the burner and surrounding the burner with a tube, open at the top but closed at the bottom, and united to the burner below said hole or holes in the burner-tube. To regulate the escape of the gas from the hole or holes at the base of the burner as a whole, and to furnish a regulatedrsupply of gas outside of the burner proper, but directed to the tip of the burner by the surrounding tube to give steadiness and increased illuminating power to the flame of the burner.
The drawing represents a bat-wing burner with my improvement applied to it. Figure l is an elevation of said burner and improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same in aplane at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a transverse section at the line w w in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of referen ce indicate corresponding parts.
(0 represents the burner-tip; b, the burnertube and c, a side hole or perforation at the base of the burner-tube. d is the surrounding tube, screwed to the base of the burnertube. a represents the side regulating screw, arranged to pass or screw through the surrounding-tube d and burner-tube opposite the side hole or perforation 0, through which the gas passes to surrounding-tube when said hole is not closed by the screwthat serves, accordingly as it is screwed in oriout-that is, toward or from the hole c-to regulate the supply of gas to the outside of the burner-tube, and into which hole 0 or female thread therein the screw 0 may also fit. An annular groove, f, may be made in the outside of the burner-tube, to facilitate the distribution of the supply of gas around said tube as it issues from the orifice c. The burner, as a whole, need not by this construction be disturbed from its place of attachment to the gas-pipe to regulate the supply of gas to the outside of the burnertube, and the number or extent of annular screwthreads is diminished as compared with the construction of the burner previously patented by me, as hereinbefore referred to.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The side regulating-screw, in combination with the burner-tube perforated at its base and the surrounding tube for regulating the supply of external gas to the burner, substantially as specified.
THEODORE OLOUGH.
